t.A.T.u will play in the film with Sting
In the picture bustling and Lena will play themselves. So Sting will.
V to picture bustling and Lena they will play itself. Sting - also. During May well-known singer for this will arrive to Moscow Recently in the musical get-together everyone only and speaks about the hasty wedding of "tatushki" bustle Volkov. Allegedly it married young person on the name Of parviz, which for bustle it left from your civil wife, eks- soloist of the group Of "tutsi" Masha veber, who bore to it child. - Net, Yulya it did not leave marry. They associate with Parvizom closely, yes. But this is not marriage, scattered rumors the close friend of Volkov, deputy from LDPR Aleksey MITROFANOV. - why to fidget is marry leave- that? Now boils the work on film according to my book To "tatu of Kam Back". Bustling and Lena they will play in it itself. Removes picture the director of famous film "mission" with Robert de niro Roland To dzhoffe. He soon to Moscow will arrive, will here all this time live. But during May we await on the surveying area of singer Sting. The budget of film - $20 mln., so that everything is serious, and on the stupidity time the Volkov does not have.

Erm. Huh? Confused Tongue

Those online translations are really quite cryptic. But thanks for posting, Sakuya! Thumb

A cameo appearance by Sting. Okay. Since this is Komsomolskaya Pravda, I'll reserve further comments till we get some kind of official statement, though.

Well, they quoted Mitrofanov saying that.. I hope the interview is not fake. BTW, sting appearance would be another strong point of the movie.. I wonder if he will play bass on they gig..

[...] I don't know much about the TATU film project but I do know its moving forward here in Hollywood. Not sure when or if us guys will make an appearance but Julia & Lena will. I think we are in it playing a show or something, not sure. When I find out more I'll let you know. Should be lots of fun to be up on the big screen, if we are in it!

Some official news from RAMCO:
Quote:

In May will start the shooting of the feature film "In Search Of t.A.T.u."

The Russian - American cinema-company "RAMCO" finishes the pre-production period of the work on the feature film "In Search Of t.A.T.u.", it's shooting will begin in Moskva in the middle of May. This is a youth & music drama, shot upon motives of the novel of A. Mitrofanov's "Tatu Comeback".

Janey Sawyer is a nice American of 16 to 17 years. She lives in Moskva already for a year, where she has absolutely no friends. Because of her enthusiasm for the group t.A.T.u. she gets to know Lana Starkova in a chat, a Russian of her age from a small town in the province. The girls meet in Moskva, to go together to a concert of the beloved group, and find themselves pulled into a whirl of unbelievable events. A "mirror" of the night life waits for them with all it's glamour and dangers, adventures at the edge of magical fairy-tales and nightly horror, tests of friendship and resistance. In spite of all conflicts, betrayals and disappointments, the girls will find the power to resist the wrong values and open new feelings and talents in themselves.

Sincerity, creative work and love will lead Janey and Lana to a meeting with t.A.T.u., but later to the fulfillment of their own dreams for another much better life. The story will end with a bright happy-end, a grandios concert in front of a huge auditorium. The viewers will await unexpected turns of the plot, brilliant and well-known people and of course, much music. The group t.A.T.u. has prepared some new songs for the project, not to forget that Yulya Volkova and Lena Katina will play there themselves.

The budget of the movie will be 12 Mio. dollars. Especially for the shooting the cinema-company "RAMCO", who specializes in the production of feature films for the international market according to technology of "foreign production" at the base of the cinema-concern "Mosfilm", has invited the famous british director and script-writer Roland Joffe. At the shooting of the film will participate international celebrities, whose names the cinema-company keeps secret at the moment. The locations of the shooting are Moskva and Yaroslavl. The presentation of the film-project "In Search Of t.A.T.u." will be during the Cannes-Festival in May 2007. The distribution of the movie will be carried out by the company "Foresight Unlimited", USA, and the preliminary sales of the film are planned in September 2007.

Thanks for the info, Sakuya and Argos. I still can't believe they're naming it "In search of t.A.T.u." Frown And... Janey and Lana? I'm sorry, but I don't feel positive about the success of this film. That doesn't mean it won't be good though.

Cannes Film Festival? Nice! My hopes for the movie grows by each update, but still I think the title is... horrible. I don't really think they should have t.A.T.u. in the title, it makes it sound a bit too much like a movie for the fans, which I hope it won't be.

But don't get your hopes up... about FESTIVAL DE CANNES, yes it's a big event, but lots of movies are invisible in the front of cameras.... so it will be only a little interview of joff I guess

My thoughts exactly. It's like marketing to t.A.T.u. fans, which is nice in a smaller sense but you really want everyone to feel interested in seeing it. Non-t.A.T.u. fans might be convinced that they won't "get" the movie and just skip it altogether.
Change the name!
(Unless, of course, it is just a movie for t.A.T.u. fans and is filled with little winks and inside jokes to those of us who would get it. But that would kinda...suck.)

However, I was a bit of a pessimist in my last post. What I do find exciting about this movie is that the plot seems good, Yulia and Lena will be in it, there will be some new songs, and it will be shown in Cannes. Smile

Well, so far we have two versions of the title, "Finding t.A.T.u." and "In Search of t.A.T.u." which are kinda similar, but still different enough. Maybe it's a translation thing? The "Finding t.A.T.u." title can be found on international websites mostly, so I think there's a bigger chance of it being the actual title. But maybe both are just preliminary, working titles, so we'll see.

I don't mind "t.A.T.u." being in the title. t.A.T.u. is a brandname, and it will most certainly get people's attention, it will be very good for promotional purposes, because t.A.T.u. IS a well-known name, a well-known group. It will draw a certain segment of the audience, it will also guarantee attention, as will the fact that Roland Joffe will be directing. But in the end, the most important things will be the quality of the movie, the quality of the promotion, and also the reviews - this will be what makes people want to watch it or not.

From what I've read about the storyline so far, I'd say that both movie titles (Finding t.A.T.u., and In Search of t.A.T.u.) make a lot of sense if you think about what t.A.T.u. signifies: (Young) people, girls, trying to be free, trying to live according to their own dreams and wishes, in defiance of norms, rebelling against social conventions, striving for self-realization in a hostile world, "be yourself, be in love", don't be "lyudi invalidy". This is what the two girls in the movie are striving for as well, they have to overcome obstacles - searching for, then finding "t.A.T.u.". You know what I mean? t.A.T.u., and what t.A.T.u. stands for, represents what the story, the movie is about. Looking for, and finding them (both metaphorically and literally) gives the two protagonists the boost and strength they need; it also chronicles a personal journey.

So, yes, having t.A.T.u. in the title makes a lot of sense to me, because of the actual content of the movie, because of the "message", and last but not least, because of promotional aspects.

Is he the confirmed director, cause on the IMDB, this movie hasn't been listed yet under his credits, in fact there's movies listed past the supposed release date for this one. Usually movies that have begun preproduction get posted to a person's credits already., Just wonderin'

Download? Awesome....since from today I am on the flat rate. :D

Anyway, I hope this movie will contain some nudity and adult entertainment. Oh, and I hope they act better than they sing. :D

This is an interesting thing. A movie. Oh well, people made all sorts of Z production, sorry, B production movies, why would this one be any different anyway? Good luck....hope they have a nice filthy rich budget so they use visual effects and cover potential bad acting.

Thanks for the links, t.A.T.u97 and Maraja. This sounds better every day. And thanks for keeping us updated, Sakuya! :)

The interview with Roland Joffe sounds really interesting. I have a feeling this will be a good movie. Remember that the script was rewritten and polished five times until everyone was happy about it? And a budget of 12 million dollars sounds okay. It all seems to come together nicely. Smile

 Moscow and L.A. - I think 12 million is okay. "Loving Annabelle" was made for 1 million, imagine what they could have done with 12. Surprised/Shocked

You're right, but I don't think this is what the majority thinks about the title in that way. The title is in that case very 'inside', I can imagine 'outside' people just thinking "Who would go looking for those Russian lesbians?" and we're back in that 'a movie for the fans that non-t.A.T.u.-fans wont really get'-track.

IMO, it will be like Harry Potter or the Lord of The Ring. There is this book that have their own fans (in this case t.A.T.u. as a band got their fans) and there is these movies, Harry Potter and LOTR Trilogy that related to those books (in this case "In Search of / Finding t.A.T.u." movie)

My point is, many of my friends that are not Harry Potter fans, even some never read the book nor know what a "Harry Potter" is, and they still watch the film, and love it. So I think putting t.A.T.u. in title will not be a problem.

As long as this movie got a good director, good plot, good actors/actresses, and good advertising, it will be fine. And of course, having t.A.T.u. girls inside it, is a huge plus point for the fans Thumb

*no offense, just stated my opinion* Wink

Roland Joffe Back in Moscow

Renowned British director, scriptwriter and producer Roland Joffe (Vatel, The Scarlet Letter,The Mission) came to Moscow to work on his new feature film Finding t.A.T.u. adapted from A. Mitrofanovs novel t.A.T.u. COME BACK. The shooting is set to begin in May, and the plot revolves around the adventures of two young girls in present-day Moscow, a unique city where anything can happen.

Its the second time Roland works with RAMCO production company in Moscow: In 2005 he directed Captivity with Hollywood stars Elisha Cuthbert and Daniel Gillies in the lead roles. Even though Captivity opens June, 22 in the US, the movies already been hitting the headlines due to the controversial marketing practiced by the movies distributor After Dark.

- Roland, you worked on such legendary films as Vatel, The Scarlet Letter, The Mission, The Killing Fields, and in May you start shooting Finding t.A.T.u. What is it that makes the project attractive to you? Why did you decide to address the subject of modern youth culture?

- I think the fascinating thing about youth everywhere, and particularly in Russia, is that it is natures way of giving humanity another chance. The wonderful thing about youth is that its a regeneration. Its true all over the world, and adults get upset about it because it makes them irrelevant. I guess we will all be irrelevant at some stage. Youth in Russia is particularly important, and if one looks at the country closely, its quite clear there are three generations who all live in slightly different worlds, maybe with varying degrees of sanity. Theres the older generation, who basically were part of whats now a discredited system, the system that ran out of steam. And its a very difficult thing for them to make the adjustments, particularly if they think the system served them well... You have a middle generation, who came into position too prominent when there was an explosion of liberalization. Half of them didnt understand its meaning too well, and didnt very well understood capitalism. Capitalism is a very complex mechanism. Its rather like Darwinism, so its easy to mistake what it is. You could easily decide Darwinism is about survival of the fittest, or even the survival of the strongest. Actually thats not what it means. Darwinism is about the survival of the most co-operative, cause the species that win best are the ones that co-operate best, not species who play zero sum games.
The second generation have been playing zero sum games with capitalism, and that cant actually go on, because it itself creates apractic society. So, they live in another kind of world. But the younger generation have an odd advantage now, because they see both worlds and realize that neither world is the answer. Theres another answer, and its in their hands, not in ours anymore. Thats why its so exciting. I think that for all young people the quest is to find out who they are. And who you are means coming to terms with your own integrity.
Since theres many of the people who grew up under the old rules, they learnt to tell lies, basically, because inside themselves they were critical of the system, but couldnt be critical openly. So they really learned not to tell the truth. The second generation, the one that arrived in the age of liberalization, decided that being brutal was the way, that you always had to take what you wanted. Its is a certain lack of integrity there, because its not what makes people work. I think the younger generation can tell us of the fact that actually integrity may be discovered through honesty, a kind of honesty to yourself and honesty about who you are and what you need. And thats very tied up with art, and with music, and with riding motorcycles, and any way the human beings choose to express themselves.
If theyre expressing themselves with honesty and integrity and the beauty that comes out of that, its automatically interesting. So I really enjoy telling a story that contains all those things in it. Its about young people trying to find their fit in the world, and the fact that young people often may not know where their talents lie. They may think that their talents lie in direction A, while in fact they lie in direction B. So, I liked the power of the story, I liked the darkness and I even liked the humor of it. Id like to do a movie thats about those very human subjects. Particularly in Moscow. The last movie I made here, but it was set in America, so I thought itd be a waste of time to be in Moscow all the way, because I couldnt use anything I learned here. So it was attractive to me, when I had the space to do this, to come back and actually express something I felt about my time in Moscow and what Ive learnt about it now. Thats fun.

- Is there any difference between the younger generation in Russia and in America?

-Well, there is and there isnt. Because all young people in the States are flocks. What all young people have in common is their need to belong to something, because they dont quite know who they are yet. And as they belong to something they begin to learn what that something is.
I think that in a way some Russian youth has more innocent dreams, the whole Russian youth probably, though its difficult to generalize. And I think some American youth are probably less sure-footed, because they live in a slightly more protected environment. But on the other end theyre close together on the outer levels, so I think Russian and American youth have far more in common than Russian youth have with Russian adults or American youth with American adults. Thats just the way life works.

- What do you personally think of t.A.T.u.?

-Well, I think t.A.T.u. is very interesting because the band is two young girls. I dont have talent, which they undoubtedly do, in learning the commercial system, and I thought as I watched them being creative, also in learning the fact that you have to work at being a pop-star. If you can achieve a communication with the public, you have to know what that communication is based on, what does the public like in you. You cant manipulate the public for very long, it gets aware very quickly. I think the nice thing about t.A.T.u. is that theres a genuine struggle going on in them to honestly express what they feel as human beings. And that too is exciting.
- Do you like t.A.T.u.s music?

Yes, my tastes in music are pretty eclectic actually, I mean I like all sorts of music. And I think some of t.A.T.u.s songs are terrific.

[...]

Alexey Mitrofanov: What's the meaning of t.A.T.u.? What made them a really successful band in the whole world? They told a story that is international. That's what it's all about. No one here in Russia can't understand this. It's an international story, a story of two girls, especially the second album - take their song "All about us" - about two girls trying to survive in this world. In different ways, but it doesn't matter the main thing is to survive. This story is universal. Can't you find such girls in Warsaw? In Paris? Don't such girls live in London, renting apartment together? There's no girls like that in Moscow? In Kiev? Of course, there are. And there are millions of them. This is a Pepsi and and t.A.T.u. generation.

Will the ambitious plans of Alexei Mitrofanov and t.A.T.u. will come to life? Well wait and see. Expectation won't take long: The movie will be out by the end of the year.

Since Duma representative Alexei Mitrofanov is the original author of the story - the movie script is based on his novel "Tatu come back" - I thought it could be of interest here that Mr. Mitrofanov has been speaking "in favour of Moscow Pride" recently. A very controversial political issue in Russia - as you will see when you read the article.

By the way: If you are interested in the book "Tatu come back", but don't know any Russian - an English translation of some chapters was posted here: http://www.alexeymitrofanov.ru/books_tatu01e.html
