“Veselye Ulybki” / “Happy Smiles” is t.A.T.u.’s third[1]
studio album.
After parting with Universal Music in 2006 and touring
Russia as well as playing a set of gigs abroad, in spring
2007 Lena Katina and Yulia Volkova started to record
new material. They worked in Germany, the US (Los-
Angeles) and in Russia. The release of the new album
should have been in December 2007, but Yulia Volkova
was expecting her second baby, and it was decided to
hold the album until the second half of 2008.
Meanwhile t.A.T.u. released two singles - "White Robe"
and "220". The biggest radio stations refused to play
the songs because they “didn’t fit the rest of the
playlist”, but videos for these tracks became the most
discussed works of Russian musicians not only in their
own country, but also in the world and made t.A.T.u.
the only artists, whose videos in Russian language were
taken in heavy airplay by Eastern Europe music TV
channels (Viva Poland, MTV Poland, MTV Baltic, MAD
TV Bulgaria, MAD TV Greece). Both videos got into The
World Chart Express of MTV Europe in March and in
August 2008 respectively.
In May 2008 t.A.T.u. released the most unique maxisingle
in band's history – hyperion-plate "Beliy
Plaschik". The uncensored version of "Beliy Plaschik"
video became the main bonus of this double-disc
edition. Despite the fact that "Beliy Plaschik" single
was available in shops only from 20 May, it appeared
on 15th line of Billboard Russia magazine May Album
Sales Chart.
“Veselye Ulybki” / “Happy Smiles” is 12 songs, born during 3-year-long silence.
For almost a year a working title of the album was
“Upravleniye Otbrosami” / “Waste Management”. But a
month before the release - for the sake of ironic smile
of those, who understand –the title changed. The
essence, however, remained.
Among “Happy Smiles” contributors there are beginners,
who were lucky to appear in the right place at the
right time (such as Masha Maksakova, a 16-year-old
school girl from St. Petersburg; she wrote the lyrics
“Beliy Plaschik” is based on). There’re also professionals
(Billy Steinberg, an author of the songs for Madonna
as well as t.A.T.u. smash hit “All About Us” (2005));
Valery Polienko, the author of the lyrics for “Ya Soshla
S Uma”, “Nas Ne Dogonyat” (2001), “Obesyanka Nol”
(2005); Sergei Galoyan, a composer of “Not Gonna
Get Us”, “Ne Ver, Ne Boysya, Ne Prosi” songs).
In 2009 “You and I”, a movie directed by Roland
Joffe, should be released. t.A.T.u. songs from the
“Happy Smiles” album will be featured in its
soundtrack.

Wait wait wait. An awful thought just struck me. What if this is the only release we get?! Half the album is Russian and half is English! There won't ultimately be two cds?!
I hope I'm just having a braincramp and that it's been confirmed we get two releases.... |

I reckon the English songs not included in Veselye Ulybki (the ones we know of: Little People, White Robe and the English versions of Snegopady, Vremya Luny and Ne Zhaley) could be included, along with other non-t.A.T.u songs, on a You & I (Finding t.A.T.u) Official Soundtrack next year.

...I'm speechless and disappointed.
I'm guessing they had legal troubles with their "Waste Management" album with a record company they were trying to get signed with to release that album. Because they're now releasing it online, they have to use a different name.
This name and art work is terrible, one of the worse I've ever seen. They couldn't put a picture of them on the cover? They had to google "Smiliing Astronaut?"
Great to have news on the album though. _________________

Finally, some official news from the deep abyss!
As for the new title/album cover - it makes sense in light of the most recent interviews with Yulia and Lena. I see the changing of the title to "Happy Smiles" as being the group's way of saying: "F&%$ you! You want happy smiles, well there you go!" to the Russian music industry.
From all the delays of the release of this cd, it has been obvious that they've had trouble "selling" themselves to music labels, and the industry in general, who have wanted them to follow a certain format.
Is their reaction childish or immature? I suppose it depends on who you ask, but for me, this whole change goes a lot deeper than smiling astronauts and "Happy Smiles".
The irony of it all is most definitely "tatuish" and Insider's latest posting on his blog expands a bit on the theme behind the new title/cover:
Quote: |
I murder what I most adore,
Laughing: I am indeed of those
Condemned for ever without repose
To laugh - but who can smile no more.
Charles Baudelaire

I wouldn't be surprised to see the old "Waste Management" photo behind the "Happy Smiles" CD cover. |

The "smiling" bit of the photo is ironic. Now I'm not privy to any insider information, so all I say is mere speculation on my part, but this whole title/album cover is t.A.T.u. at its best - doing what they do best: confusing the hell out of everyone.
Yes, it does get frustrating, but this inexplicable nature of the band is what makes them so endearing. That is why many of their fans, myself included, love and have followed them for all these years. It's never simple or easy with t.A.T.u., and given all they have done in the past, you can be sure that they didn't just google the wierdest/silliest photo out there and decide on it with no back thought at all. There is more than meets the eye with this photo/new title - look beyond it. |

I think the Waste Management photo with their faces scratched out sent a far better message than this and was disturbing & very interesting; It was VERY t.A.T.u. This cover is just a complete joke. Who cares what point they're trying to accomplish when the cover looks like something a 2 year old makes for their mommy? They may have been pushed for time but even the most amateur photoshopper could have took one of their photos and put text on it.
Sorry. I don't mean to be a complete debbie downer but this is just very disappointing...They have the Marc Jacobs international campaign and a movie coming out and they're supposed to be taken seriously with this album cover? _________________

Hmm it definitely looks like the Asian chick is just on the cover of a sleeve of some sort; the actual case looks to be inside of it.

The "Asian chick" is Yi So-yeon, a South Korean scientist, "the first Korean and the second Asian woman to fly in space" (in April 2008).
Please see here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yi_So-yeon
I like the cover, it took me a little while to get used to it, but I understand why they changed it. I liked "Waste Management" better, but I think the new cover is more of an eye-catcher - and the subtle (or not so subtle) irony - which may be lost on most, but not on the "insiders" - is clever and very Tatu-ish. They remained true to themselves. |

I liked the cover the moment I saw it, even though I didn’t believe it was for real. It makes me smile happily. I think it is intended to look like something a child would produce. I’m glad they’ve gone with this cover and I’m absolutely delighted they’ve dropped the name Waste Management. _________________ I've got "Property of Yulia Volkova" tatued on my heart. |

I'm VERY excited about this, but then again I never wasn't! The tracklist looks amazing --- all my favorite demo songs are there, and who doesn't love some surprise new tracks?
Also, I can't wait until "You and I" premieres on Love Radio on Friday. I'm listening to the station right now, actually, and it comes in loud and clear (unlike some other streaming radio stations I've tried over the years).
Lastly, I actually like the cover design. It's ironic and rather pop art-ish, and we know there has to be some darker design underneath it. I can't help but think that people that are hung up on the title/cover change are only proving the girls' thesis that everyone is too obsessed with image nowadays. Maybe it's just my dark sense of humor, but I think what they're doing is very funny. I imagine it will make even more sense when we finally get to hear the whole album.
I wonder if they'll be making an announcement about the ~concrete~ release date either on the upcoming radio show or after the Moscow concert. I personally believe the hints add up to an early October street date, but it might be sooner. _________________

Who says there ever was a song called Waste Management? It's never been officially announced as a song title as far as I know, only been leaked on unofficial fan-sites as an instrumental demo (along with countless others that proved to be fake). Besides, we haven't got time listings yet - there could be a hidden track!

WOW! All these changes just make me want the album RIGHT NOW! I think that all of these changes are great and really tells the World why t.A.T.u likes to run their own show.
But the album cover??? C'mon really?!....... Well, it just goes to show ya how t.A.T.u is never willing to hide their eccentric sense of humor! ...along with their ecclectic taste in ablum art (whatever it makes no difference to me; it's not like the art work affects the music)
P.S: Who else agrees that the old Upravleniye Otbrosami emblem would make a sweet Subwoofer grill? _________________ If the Beats of your Life don't match the Beats of your Heart, how will you ever synchronize them into a masterful Sonata?
